Phenom With The Discovery G3 Ready To Go |
||
The Swan River is located in Perth Western Australia so I decided to see how the Discovery G3 light goes on a very dirty night dive. This was going to be a cold......it was a freezing 23 Celsius- 73 Fahrenheit dive so being a softy, I decided I would use my dry suit. We got set up on the banks of the Swan River as the sun was going down, then just simply walked in. |
||
For the whole dive I had the light on the 35 watt setting as using the 50 watt setting was just way to much with all the particles floating around the place. The other thing one will notice is that not only do you need zero db gain but you will be looking for the manual iris setting as on auto most shots up close will be just way too hot. I set the shutter on 50 PAL (50i) and allot of the time the iris was around the 5.6 fstop. |

I positioned the light above the housing again and I must add that with the housing and light underwater it weighed nothing. Most of the time I was just hanging onto the Phenom's center top grab handle and shot one handed, it was that easy. The reason I did that was as soon as you touched the bottom you sent a billions particles off in all directions. I felt that if I had a light each side things would of been more balanced but also wondered how I would deal with all that light power. |

| Once again you can shoot things quite a distance away due to the light penetration but as this dive was so dirty I kept the shots close. | ||

Get Use To Closing The Iris Up |
|
| I'm going to mess around with some diffusers to try and get the light spread out more evenly and if needed crank the light to 50 watts to get back the penetration depth that the extra diffusing will take away. | ||

We spent 70 min's underwater in total and the light was on for all of it so no problems about running out of power for most dives. On 30 watts you get over 2 hours so two dives back to back should not be a problem. I plan to do some daylight dives to see how it goes. I'm also happy to say my that my socks, jocks and shirt were all still nice and dry when I took off my dry suit but my wet suit dive buddy (Andrew) had a few shivers here and there. Paul Wags 2009 |
