Mini DV4.3 to HD (1280/720 or 1920/1080) using VirtualDub and EDIUS

Like many out there, I have a huge archive of Mini DV 4.3 that was just sitting around, so after much trial and error I came up with this method using Virturaldub. Its free and the quality is pretty good. The cleaner the original footage the better the results you will achieve. You can use this same method to just convert it from DV 4.3 to DV 16.9.

Download Virtualdub here, its open source (FREE)

Inport your mini DV 4.3 clip into Virtualdub (trim the clip if you like)
Choose filters
Select the Null Transform filter

Then click on Cropping Button and put 81 into the Y1 and Y2 settings box

Width of your video (pal 576) divded by 16 then multiply by 9 to get 324 then divded by 2 = 162 divde by 2 = 81

Add in the filter Warp Resize and put in 1280/720 (can be 1920/1080 if footage is very clean)
Then set your codec compression
I used Canopus HQ for EDIUS 5
Away it goes, you can even set the processing thread to max if you have multi cores

Then import your 1280/720 or 1920/1080 HD clip into EDIUS and away you go!
